The ecological balance of nature is very important to lead a healthy life. Presently Natural resources through out the world are depleting at a rapid rate due to unawareness of the community on the values and important of the environment and also due to peoples never ending thirst for wealth.

environmental-education-servicesLocated at the Eastern Border of the Madampa Lake Wild Life Sanctuary at the south-western coast of Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean. This region is one of the most beautiful and picturesque landscapes in Sri Lanka with unique biodiversity with several endemic flora and fauna species including Rich Mangrove Ecosystem, valuable medicinal plants, several hundred species of nutritional vegetables and other crop species which are traditionally grown in the area.

Nagenahiru Center for Environmental Education established in 2008 to facilitate,Nagenahiru-foundation-organisation create and promote environmental awareness, Knowledge & Appreciation through hands-on experience in a Natural Outdoor classroom. Surrounded by thousands of acres of constructed wetlands with high bio diversity, it provides Educational opportunities about the rich biodiversity of the area.

The wetland features elevated boardwalks through Mangroves, featuring interpretive signs about the habitat, a perfect place for learning, exploring, getting away and connecting.

The newly built Nature Center includes a Lecture hall with facilities for 40, Gift shop, Brackish water Aquarium, Plant resources center for neglected and underutilized vegetables and other crop species, medicinal plant arboretum, 65ft height observation Tower, and an extensive exhibition room that highlights biological attributes.

Overall Aims of the Centre

  1. Encourage, promote and implement educational, training and action programs to develop and strengthen the positive attitude on Protecting Rich Biological Diversity and Values of Different Ecosystems.
  2. Sharing of experience, Knowledge and Available resources as far as possible with other relevant organizations home and abroad.
  3. Promote volunteerism among the different sectors of the community through local & international volunteer placement programs.
  4. Development of sustainable linkages among interested individuals and institutions engaged in conservation of threaten ecosystems through out the world.

Awareness creation and Environmental Education Programmes

Wetland Recreation Activities

Wetland-Recreation-activitiesDuring holidays Nagenahiru Center for Environmental Education also provide wetland Recreation activities to the local and foreign visitors interested in conserving the nature.

Recreational Activities include: canoeing in the lake; learning to paddle; fishing with fishermen; eco-camping in a Mangrove forest; up-stream the lake by traditional catamaran/boat through mangrove tunnels; enhancing awareness on Wetland Flora & Fauna; planting few mangrove plants in a restoration project.

Environment Educational Activities, Printing and publishing Educational materials on Environmental Issues,

Conducting community awareness programmes on Biodiversity Protection & conservation. Facilitating the Law enforcement jointly with the participation of Government Law enforcing Authority to protect the endangered flora and fauna species.
